W, Asylum seeker, Afghanistan

I have been in the UK for six months. I speak Dari/Pashto and English.

Before coming to the UK I was working for the World Bank in IT support.

I am interested in starting my new career as a cyber security analyst.

Black bags

This is not rubbish, this is our laundry.

Each Wednesday we give our clothes to be cleaned and they come back in black bags and are dumped in a pile, each bag with a room number on it.

Everybody rushes to find their own clothes.

Sometimes their clothes are missing.

Iftar

The Iftar is an evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.

Four or five of us clubbed together our food and arranged an iftar in our hotel room.

Freedom

This is the outside of the hotel.

We hope that one day we will be released from these hotels and go and see flowers and enjoy the outside of the world.

Modern jail

It is not easy for an asylum seeker to stay in a hotel room for months.

You spend many hours alone, it is very isolating.

Hotels are often a long way from support services and you have no money for bus tickets to reach them.
